Year 5 Forensics STEM Immersion Day

Primary School students from Miller and Glenfield visit Hurlstone for a STEM day.

On the 6th of December, Year 10 Hurlstone students, led by Ms Rose, worked with Year 5 students from Glenfield Public School and Miller Public School in a STEM immersion day.  Students began the day with a talk from the Community Police Liaison Officer who set the scene.  Students were charged with gathering the evidence and solving the crime of the break in to the vehicle taped off in Horn Park.

Students spent the day becoming experts in footprint analysis, fibre analysis, fingerprint analysis and blood typing. They collected evidence from the vehicle and surrounds and then triangulated their data to determine the most likely suspect for the crime.  The students from the primary schools thoroughly enjoyed their day working in a high school laboratory, using the equipment and eating in the boarding school dining room.

We hope to run many more experiences like this once our new STEAM building opens in 2019.
