Every school assembly begins with an Acknowledgement of Country:

We acknowledge the traditional custodians of the land we gather on today, the border of the Dharawal and Dharug people’s Country. It is on their ancestral grounds that we aim to better our understanding of each other, to take care of Country and to celebrate Aboriginal histories and cultures so that it is in our present and future.

As Hurlstonians we would also like to extend our respect and appreciation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders Elders past, present and emerging today. Through our school motto 'Pro Patria', meaning "for one's country", we would like to acknowledge the significance of Country, which is not only the land we stand on, but the waterways we drink from and the air we breathe.

We do this to show our respect for all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people as this nation's ongoing custodians of the lands and waterways where we work and live. Ceremonies and protocols are a fundamental part of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander cultures. By observing these protocols and participating in this cultural practice, we aim to deepen our understanding of and respect for Aboriginal cultures, practices and heritage.
